Android phone helps driver win speeding court case
Writing for skatter tech, blogger Sahas Katta has detailed how his Motorola Droid Android phone spared him from a speeding ticket in court. The key to his defense was Googles My Tracks app, which was running at the time the speeding offence was allegedly committed. My Tracks enables users to record GPS tracks and view live statistics including time, speed, distance and elevation. According to Katta, he was driving in a 25 miles per hour zone when an officer clocked him with a radar gun doing 40 miles per hour. At the time the citation was issued, Katta was too busy dutifully handing over his licence, insurance and registration to argue with the officer even though he felt that he had not been speeding. It was only when he … Read entire article »

Motorola reveals 28% of phone revenue from Verzion in 2010
Motorola in an SEC filing on Friday confirmed a heavy dependency on Verizon for its success. About 28 percent of all of Motorola’s net revenue in 2010, including only the mobile group that split off this year, could be attributed solely to supplying Verizon with phones. The figure could almost exclusively be attributed to Android phones and was portrayed as leaving the company vulnerable if it lost some or all of Verizon’s deal. “Motorola Mobility has several large customers, the loss of one or more of which could have a material adverse effect on us,” it said. The detail supported Verizon’s heavy leaning on Android for its phone strategy and that Motorola’s success was also tied strongly to the US carrier just as its standing was no longer secure. … Read entire article »

Motorola Xoom ‘real’ hands-on: not quite there yet
Mobile World Congress gave us the opportunity to try what should be the final version of the Motorola Xoom. While we got a live demo at CES under controlled conditions, we wanted to see how it would be in real life. Read on for Electronista‘s impressions and how well the final hardware will stack up against the iPad, its most obvious competitor. The first thing you might notice is the weight. It’s only a tenth of a pound heavier than the iPad, but it can subjectively feel heavier. We suspect that’s due to the aspect ratio: at 16:10 versus Apple’s 4:3, holding it in portrait mode makes it taller and puts a lot of the weight bias towards the back. Compare it to the Galaxy Tab … Read entire article »

Hands-on with Huawei’s S7 Slim tablet and Ideos X5 phone
Two of Huawei’s newest creations, the S7 Slim tablet and the Ideos X5 mid-range smartphone, showed at Mobile World Congress and gave us an opportunity to try them for the first time. The X5 is entering a crowded field, but the S7 Slim is a unique entry into Android tablets with a very wide screen and a freshly organized home screen. Read through for Electronista‘s impressions from the Barcelona show. What stands out for the S7 Silm the most is how much the aspect ratio guides everything. The widescreen is great for watching movies, of course, but it also dictates the layout of the custom UI. Rather than just have simple home screens, Huawei uses multiple categories — communication, entertainment, and the web, for example — to … Read entire article »
