AT&T: we’re still not happy with iPhone call quality
AT&T’s wireless chief Ralph de la Vega at his D9 talk said the company still didn’t like the state of its call quality, primarily for iPhone owners. The carrier was “not happy or satisfied” with where it was. He spun it by noting that it was “improving” and pointed to examples such as the heavy investment in 850MHz and 1,900MHz wireless spectrum in New York City, which was more than any carrier had ever put into a single city. “I think that customers are seeing improvement, [but] we are not happy where we are,” he explained. AT&T has so far managed to get past concerns that the Verizon iPhone would immediately steal market share. Verizon activated 2.2 million CDMA iPhones, but AT&T set a new record for a first … Read entire article »

Leap joins in objections to AT&T, T-Mobile merger
Cricket’s parent company Leap Wireless provided its own objection on Tuesday to AT&T’s proposed buyout of T-Mobile. The carrier suggested that letting the deal go through would lead to “alarming concentration” by putting too much power in the hands of two carriers, AT&T and Verizon. A merger would only hurt customers, it said. The sentiments mirror those of Sprint, which at a Senate hearing earlier this month warned of a carrier duopoly and referred to AT&T and Verizon often as “the two Bells,” alluding back to the days of a single-company monopoly over landline phone service in the US. MetroPCS has been concerned as well and urged that, if a deal went ahead, the FCC should require AT&T divest some of its network to create a more even … Read entire article »

Samsung Infuse 4G, HP Veer 4G hit AT&T shelves
Two smartphones at the opposite ends of the size spectrum reached AT&T stores on Sunday. The Samsung Infuse 4G is the largest smartphone in the US and centers on its 4.5-inch, 480×800 Super AMOLED Plus screen along with a 1.2GHz processor, 21Mbps HSPA+ cellular data, an eight-megapixel rear camera, and a front 1.3-megapixel camera. In spite of the size, the Android 2.2 flagship costs the same $ 200 on contract as most … Read entire article »

HP Veer 4G shows in white for AT&T press shots
The HP Veer has made an appearance in AT&T press shots dressed in white ahead of its rumored launch on May 2. This will mark the first time that a webOS device has been available in a color other than black, and it joins the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S as two other high-profile handsets in adopting the popular color. When it lands next week, as expected, the Veer will be one of the most … Read entire article »

AT&T phasing out Video Share in wake of smartphones
AT&T in a statement said its long-running Video Share service would be shut down later in 2011. The one-way video calling was bowing out to make room for the “next generation” of mobile video services. A spokesman alluded to a possible replacement as the company was “evaluating new platforms” that it could use. Many of those paying for Video Share would be reached directly and given new options. Video Share rolled out in earnest in July 2007 and was intended for a short-lived category of basic feature phones that had 3G and a camera capable of live video streaming. The service never became a major factor and quickly became obsolete with the rise of video-capable smartphones, especially the iPhone 4 and every 2011 Android model on AT&T so far. … Read entire article »
